Psychotridine is a fascinatingly complex tryptamine alkaloid isolated and purified to 98% purity from the Brazilian Psychotria flower and leaf materials, which are used in ethnobotanical contexts by the Amazonian people. A sophisticated process is necessary to separate the psychotridine from other alkaloids found alongside it in the Psychotria material. The psychotridine is fractionated from an alkaloidal extract of plants of the Psychotria genus. Although first isolated some years ago, psychotridine has never before been made available for research. Psychotridine has a very unusual molecular structure, being a pentaramic contrained pyrrolidinoindoline tryptamine. Valuable research must be continued on this interesting alkaloid. It is our hope that a few will go out on a limb and do some research with this one. This just goes to show why ethnobotany can be so interesting!
